OUT140 is an exciting project that I created with poet/artist Vince Laws for Norwich Pride. We asked people to tell us their coming out tales in 140 characters or less - a tweet on the website Twitter. OUT140 began life in January 2010 when we had our first multimedia show on the giant Fusion screen in the Forum in Norwich.
OUT140 then went on the road in exhibitions at arts centres and libraries across Norfolk and in February 2012, Vince took them to Folkestone for his solo show "I am a poem". Vince says:
"Wherever we go OUT140 weaves it's magic and we hear wonderful tales. It's such an accessible form of storytelling - it can be quite a challenge summing up an important part of your life in such a tiny space, yet over and over again we are charmed and delighted by the stories people come up with. As a poet, I find it particularly fascinating because every letter and space counts."
In 2012 we launched "OUT140: The Little Book of Coming Out Stories" bringing together 140 of our favourite tales. It costs £1.40. If you'd like to buy the book email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also borrow it from Norfolk Libraries.
What next? We would like to develop OUT140 as a play and also as workshops that we can take into schools and staff training sessions. It's a really simple, yet powerful way to help people to understand what it's like to be LGBT: lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans. You can see all the OUT140 stories we've collected so far at www.twitter.com/OUT140
